Why is public speaking important? 10 Great Answers

Why is public speaking important? When students connect the what to the why, real learning is the result. In other words, students need to understand not just WHAT they’ll be learning, but WHY they need this information and these skills. This connection is critical in a public speaking class. I like to begin my public speaking classes with the questions, “Why is public speaking important?” and “Why does communication matter?” Let me share ten great answers for the sake of brevity (and there are more):

  1. Students develop confidence and poise as they hone their public speaking skills.

  2. Students embrace their vulnerabilities as they work through their public speaking anxiety, and they emerge stronger.

  3. Public speaking skills are communication skills. These communication skills apply to all types of communication.

  4. Students become better acquainted with their peers in a public speaking class. They value each other, they learn to lean on each other, they trust each other, and they embrace their differences.

  5. Students become more discerning consumers of information.

  6. Public speakers can influence audience members to make necessary changes.

  7. Students learn to express themselves with tact.

  8. Students develop leadership skills.

  9. Students find more meaning and success in relationships when they are skilled communicators.

  10. Students find more academic and career success when they communicate effectively.
